Many best mystery novel writers produce the majority of their work before becoming known or famous, and these books tend to be published after the event, as it were. This previous output contains some real gems.

 

All avid fans of thriller mystery know the famous book 'Day Of The Jackal'  by Frederick Forsyth, and we can imagine that this book was the result of many years of trial and error, churning out thrillers and getting many rejection slips from publishers.

 

In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. After working in Africa as a journalist, Forsyth returned to England with no job and no money. He decided he'd better try to write a book based on his dealings with mercenaries and other shadowy figures he met in Africa. In just 36 days he wrote 'Jackal'. After several rejections, one publisher took a gamble and the rest is history.
